21 Chief Justices from Asia and the Pacific gather in Singapore to renew commitment to advance judicial reform

31 October 2013 - The Supreme Court of Singapore played host to more than 20 Chief Justices and delegates from 23 jurisdictions in the Asia and Pacific region who are in Singapore to attend the 5th Asia Pacific Judicial Reform Forum (APJRF) from 31 October 2013 to 1 November 2013. The meeting is held at the Supreme Court of Singapore auditorium.

2         The APJRF, a network of 49 superior courts and justice sector agencies in the Asia Pacific Region, is committed to supporting Asia Pacific jurisdictions in the advancement of judicial reform. The meeting, the fifth in the series, will discuss issues relating to judicial reform as well as the enhancement of judicial capabilities through judicial training and education. More information about the APJRF and the meeting is available at

3         Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said “This meeting is an excellent opportunity for all members of the APJRF to renew our commitment to advancing meaningful and effective judicial reforms and to discuss how judiciaries can meet the challenges brought about by globalisation and increasing international trade. This is also provides an excellent forum for us to work on robust technical assistance programs and to enhance relationships among judiciaries in the Asia Pacific region so that we can learn from one another and develop best practices. We also intend to extend these efforts to the training and education of Judges in the lower courts who carry out the bulk of judicial work in each jurisdiction. I look forward to the discussions over the next two days and the positive impact that the meeting can bring to all Judiciaries in the Asia and Pacific region”.
