Appointment of Judge of Appeal and Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court

Singapore, 1 August 2012 - The President has appointed Mr Sundaresh Menon S.C. and Mr Vinodh Sabesan Coomaraswamy S.C. as a Judge of Appeal and Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court respectively with effect from 1 August 2012. They were sworn in at a ceremony held at the Istana today.

Mr Sundaresh Menon S.C.

Mr Menon graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) from the National University of Singapore in 1986, and later obtained a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in 1991.  He was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1987 and as an Attorney and Counsellor-at-law of the Bar of the State of New York in 1992. Mr Menon was appointed Senior Counsel in 2008.

He began his legal career in the law firm of Shook Lin & Bok in 1987 and became a partner in 1990. He went on to join the law firms of Wong Partnership, Rajah & Tann and Jones Day as a partner between 1991 - 2006. From April 2006 – March 2007, Mr Menon was appointed as Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court. After his stint at the Bench, he returned to Rajah & Tann becoming the Managing Partner in August 2009 before his appointment as the Attorney-General of Singapore on 1 October 2010, a position he held until 24 June 2012.

Mr Vinodh Sabesan Coomaraswamy S.C.

Mr Coomaraswamy graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from Nottingham University in 1990, and obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law degree from Oxford University in 1998. He won first prize in the 1991 Trinity Bar Examinations and later that year was called to the Bar of England & Wales by the Inner Temple. He was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1992. He is concurrently admitted in New South Wales (2005) and New York (2007). Mr Coomaraswamy was appointed Senior Counsel in 2005. 

He began his legal career in the law firm of Shook Lin & Bok in 1992, and became a partner in 1996. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators. He is also a member of the panel of arbitrators of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, the Vietnam International Arbitration Centre and the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

With the appointments of Mr Menon and Mr Coomaraswamy, the Supreme Court will have a total of 17 Judges and one Judicial Commissioner.
