Appointment of Judicial Commissioner Tan Siong Thye as High Court Judge and the Swearing in of Justice Steven Chong and Justice Tan Siong Thye

Singapore, 1 July 2014 – The President of the Republic of Singapore, acting in his
discretion, and in concurrence with the advice of the Prime Minister, has appointed Judicial Commissioner Tan Siong Thye (陈祥泰)as a Judge of the High Court of Singapore under Article 95(1) of the Constitution with effect from 1 July 2014.

2        A ceremony was held at the Istana today, where Mr Tan as well as Mr Steven Chong Horng Siong (庄泓翔) both took their affirmation of office. Mr Chong has been re-appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Singapore from 25 June 2014. With the appointment of Mr Chong and Mr Tan, the Supreme Court will have a total of 14 Judges (including the Chief Justice) and four Judicial Commissioners.

Justice Tan Siong Thye

3        Mr Tan joined the Singapore Legal Service in June 1979 as a Deputy Public Prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Chambers and went on to hold various appointments at the State Courts (the Subordinate Courts of Singapore was renamed “State Courts” on 7 March 2014), the Ministry of Finance and the Singapore Police Force. He returned to the State Courts in June 2008, where he was appointed Judicial Officer, and Chief District Judge in February 2010. Mr Tan was appointed a Judicial Commissioner on 1 October 2013.

4        Mr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1979 with a Bachelor of Laws (2nd Class Honours, Lower Division) degree and from the University of London in 1992 with a Master of Law (Merit) degree. Mr Tan, age 60, is married.
