Extension of Appointment of Justice Quentin Loh as High Court Judge

The President of the Republic of Singapore, in accordance with Article 95 (2) of the Constitution, has extended the appointment of Justice Quentin Loh Sze-On (罗赐安) for a period of two years as a High Court Judge with effect from 25 December 2015.

2     The swearing-in ceremony will take place on 8 January 2016 at the Istana.

3     Justice Loh, who will turn 65 on 24 December 2015, would have been due for retirement as a Judge of the Supreme Court on that date. He was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Singapore on 1 September 2009 and a High Court Judge on 1 June 2010.  As a Judge, he has heard a wide range of cases with particular emphasis in all aspects of construction, commercial litigation, including complex technical disputes, and arbitration (domestic and international).  Since January 2013, Justice Loh has also been sitting from time to time in the Court of Appeal. Justice Loh was selected by the Chief Justice to hear the first case of the Singapore International Commercial Court together with two International Judges, Justice Vivian Ramsey and Justice Anselmo Reyes. Justice Loh also chairs the Professional Affairs Committee of the Singapore Academy of Law, the Committee tasked by the Chief Justice to examine better approaches to the conduct of litigation involving personal injuries and accidents as well as the Committee to review the professional standards of lawyers in the Supreme Court and the State Courts.

4     With the reappointment of Justice Loh, the Supreme Court will continue to have a total of 14 Judges (including the Chief Justice), 10 Judicial Commissioners, five Senior Judges and 12 International Judges.
