Media Release - Extension of appt of Justice Kannan Ramesh as Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam

EXTENSION OF APPOINTMENT OF JUSTICE KANNAN RAMESH AS JUDICIAL COMMISSIONER OF THE SUPREME COURT OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM 

 

Justice Kannan Ramesh’s appointment as Judicial Commissioner[1] of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam on a part-time basis will be extended for another two years with effect from 7 October 2021.

 

2 Justice Ramesh was first appointed as Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam on a part-time basis for a period of two years on 7 October 2019. He heard a total of 11 commercial and civil cases physically and virtually during this period.

 

3 On Justice Ramesh’s extension of appointment to the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam, Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon said: “I am delighted that Justice Ramesh’s appointment as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam will be extended for another two years. This is an excellent reflection of the already close ties and judicial cooperation between our two judiciaries, and of our continued commitment to our mission of upholding the rule of law internationally.”

 

4 Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Steven Chong echoed the sentiments of Chief Justice Menon and said, “We are very pleased that Justice Ramesh’s appointment as a Judicial Commissioner of the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam has been extended for another two years. Brunei Darussalam and Singapore share a longstanding special relationship and the extension of the appointment of Justice Ramesh signifies the commitment to deepen our judicial cooperation. Justice Ramesh has extensive experience in dispute resolution in commercial cases and international arbitration and in his role as Judicial Commissioner, he has contributed to the development of our civil and commercial jurisprudence. He has also played an active role in facilitating talks and training to our judges and judicial officers, which have proven to be invaluable in supporting our capacity building efforts. We look forward to working with Justice Ramesh again and I am excited to see the ways in which his appointment will further advance our engagement with the Supreme Court of Singapore.”

[1] All part-time Judges appointed to the Supreme Court of Brunei Darussalam are designated as “Judicial Commissioner”. This has no bearing on the Judge’s seniority nor his/her jurisdiction, powers, duties or authority when hearing cases.
