Singapore to host the APJRF Roundtable Meeting 2009

Singapore to host Asia-Pacific Judicial Reform Forum (APJRF)
Round Table Meeting from 19-21 January 2009


       Singapore will host the 3rd Round Table Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Judicial Reform Forum (APJRF) from 19 to 21 January 2009.   The APJRF, which has 49 member countries, is a network of superior courts and justice sector agencies in the Asia-Pacific region united towards the common goal of contributing towards judicial reform.

2      During the Round Table Meeting, about 90 delegates from 30 countries, including Chief Justices and senior judicial officers from the various Asia-Pacific jurisdictions, will discuss challenging issues that judiciaries have to deal with. These range from case management to judicial ethics, access to justice and judicial education. The Round Table Meeting will provide an open and interactive platform for delegates to share actual experiences and learn from each other to advance and enhance judicial reform in their own countries.

3      The Opening Ceremony of the Round Table Meeting will take place on Tuesday, 20 January 2009, at the Supreme Court Auditorium. The Honourable the Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong will deliver the Keynote Address.

4      Said Principal District Judge Khoo Oon Soo, Chairman of the organizing committee:  “Apart from being an occasion to engage in a robust discussion on judicial reform, we hope that the Round Table Meeting will also provide an opportunity for Asia-Pacific judiciaries to strengthen ties with each other.”  

5      The 3rd APJRF Round Table Meeting is jointly organized by the Supreme Court and State Courts of Singapore, in collaboration with the APJRF Secretariat from Australia, United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Democracy Fund, and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID). It is being jointly sponsored by the Supreme Court, the State Courts and the Singapore Academy of Law.
