Supreme Court Envisions Court Trial of the Future

Mock electronic trial showcases technological tools that
enable more efficient and effective court hearings

Singapore, 12 August 2011 – The Supreme Court held a mock electronic trial today as part of the Singapore Academy of Law’s two-day International Conference on Electronic Litigation. It showcased various technological innovations that judiciaries and counsel around the world can leverage to streamline and conduct court hearings more efficiently.

Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng from WongPartnership hosted the mock electronic trial session, together with Supreme Court Assistant Registrars Crystal Tan, Paul Chan, and Ang Feng Qian. Over 180 legal practitioners and members of the judiciary from more than 30 countries attended the session, which was held in collaboration with Bizibody Technology Pte Ltd and Merrill Corporation Asia Limited.

“In line with the conference’s focus on electronic litigation, this session was designed to showcase how technology can be used to facilitate hearings in our courtrooms today. The tools that were featured today are currently available in Singapore, but this is the first time they have been deployed together in the same setting. Clearly, this suggests that while there is much that technology offers us today, it is the effective harnessing and integration of various tools in the overall court system that will enable the judiciary to carry out its role of administering justice more efficiently,” said Assistant Registrar Crystal Tan.

During the mock trial, various technologies were showcased. These included the Trial Director programme, a legal trial presentation software that enables exhibits, documents, graphics, and videos to be easily pulled up during the course of a trial; the use of software such as Syncpad and hand-held tablets like the iPad to sketch images for real-time display in court; and Transcend, a software that provides a ‘live’ transcript of court proceedings.
